Cystocele Mesh Repair
Most people who are not in the medical field do not know what Cystocele is. Cystocele or “”fallen bladder”” is otherwise known as anterior vaginal wall prolapsed in medical term.
Such condition may require medical attention and they do require potential surgical procedures.
Cystocele mesh repair is a common surgical procedure in the pelvic area. Cystocele is a condition in which the wall between the vagina and the bladder weakens. The bladder slowly drops to the vagina area that will result to pain during urination.
Surgeons (gynecologist/urologist) use a technique called anterior colporrhappy to repair cystocele. They first apply anesthesia (general or regional) to the patient then they insert a speculum and make an incision. The surgeons then separate the bladder from the vagina by correctly positioning back the bladder to its proper place.
Surgeons use sutures that are strong to stitch back the incision. Strong sutures support the weak tissues and eventually the sutures will disappear over time. There are also other surgical techniques used to repair the cystocele. See this one Cystocele repair.
Understanding The Repair
Cystocele Mesh Repair is a form of cystocele surgery done by a gynecologist that uses synthetic mesh instead of organic sutures. This surgery is being done to women who have cystocele, wherein the bladder bulges, impeding the flow of urine and causes pain and discomfort.
According to studies, a cystocele mesh repair is more effective than the cystocele surgery using the sutures. A number of doctors have claimed that this procedure is more effective and that it lessens the possibility of another repair in prolapse.
Some have also mentioned that this procedure is safer and reduces the possibility of infections. This kind of surgery helps in fixing prolapse, cystocele, and rectocele fixed without needing to undergo hysterectomy.
Hysterectomy is defined by the medical dictionary as the surgical removal of the uterus. Normally, this is being done when the cystocele has progressed and there is already rectocele or herniated rectum protruding to the vagina.
Cystocele mesh repair is the most popular treatment option in dealing with cystocele.
Cystocele can be caused by different factors such as child birth, heavy lifting and surgeries. The level of cystocele can go from mild to severe. Grade 3 wherein the bladder already bulges through the opening of the vagina already requires surgery.
Nevertheless, the prominence of cystocele mesh repair as treatment for this condition is also subjected to criticisms, even if this treatment is intended to be a remedy. Although it has proven its effectiveness in keeping the bladder in place, it also contributes in a negative manner.
Some adverse side effects of cystocele mesh repair include incontinence, bleeding, vaginal scarring and mesh erosion.
Side Effects of the Mesh
There has supposedly been a high percentage of surgical success but there are many women who have undergone the procedure suffered serious side effects.
Some of the side effects include: Infections, worsening vaginal pain, urinary trouble, recurrence of prolapsed are some of the serious complication that has inflicted these women.
This resulted to the many lawsuits being reportedly filed against the manufacturer of the mesh.
The Care for Patient
While they are admitted in the hospital, genuine care must be given. Before the surgery, the patient must sign an informed consent where the tests, treatments, or procedures needed are explained.
If the patient does know how to read or write, it is the job of the doctor, nurse or any medical staff to read the consent and have the patient write an “”X”” mark on the blank provided indicating that the procedure was explained.
Pre-operative medicines are also given to the patient, pain medicines to reduce discomfort and stool softeners to avoid strain while defecating before and after the surgery. Blood tests and Imaging tests are also needed before the surgery.
After the surgery, the patient is given an hour to rest at the post-operative room, followed by the insertion of foley catheter to help urinate easily. The patient is then required to ambulate to further increase the pace of recovery.
Other Things to Know
There are several factors that can contribute to an occurrence of cystocele. Factors such as heavy lifting and childbirth are activities that can lead to cystocele. The severity of the symptoms depends on the grade of the cystocele.
Grade one is mild, grade two is moderate and grade three is severe. When the cystocele is in grade three, surgery is needed.
In cystocele mesh repair, a synthetic surgical net is used to give support to put the bladder back to its normal position. It can also give strength to the muscles surrounding it.
It has been reported that this treatment shows some promising results but remember that it can also cause complications to the patient.
My aunt just underwent surgery for cystocele mesh repair. She is 67 years old and has been suffering cystocele bladder prolapse, hence the corrective procedure.
I never really knew about these things until this incident. All I knew is that Aunt Mary Anne had been complaining about her incontinence.
I thought it was just a normal thing for old people. It turns out that hers was caused by a condition called cystocele bladder prolapse, which, plainly stated, is descended bladder.
Her bladder descended to her vaginal because of the weakened muscles around it. To correct this condition, she underwent an operation to put a mesh or surgical netting on bladder to secure it back to place.
Hopefully, the procedure will solve her incontinence problem and will make her live a more comfortable life even at old age.
We are all praying for her fast recovery so she can be well and healthy in time for her 68th birthday celebration.
